Say Yes to The Best Yes

Are you living with the stress of an overwhelmed schedule and aching with the sadness of an underwhelmed soul? So many of us moms are. If this sounds like you, join me for a free 6-week online book study of The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst.

In The Best Yes, with her awesome sense of humor, Lysa will show us that there is a big difference between saying yes to everyone and saying yes to God. She will help us:
  • Cure the disease to please with a biblical understanding of the command to love.
  • Escape the guilt of disappointing others by learning the secret of the small no.
  • Overcome the agony of hard choices by embracing a wisdom based decision-making process.
  • Rise above the rush of endless demands and discover your best yes today.
The best part is that you don't even have to leave home to participate! We will meet online in a private Facebook group on six consecutive Tuesday evenings from 8-9 p.m Central time to discuss what we have read so far. So are you in?!

If You Want to Fly ...

Friends, this image really speaks to me. In some ways we are all butterflies trying to fly, but allowing something to weigh us down.

What is that for you?

Is it a bad habit?

A false belief that tells you you are not good enough?

A volunteer opportunity you should have said no to?

A job that is just killing you with stress or boredom?

A difficult relationship that never seems to get better?

What do you have to give up in order to really fly?

Take it to God. See what he has to say...

How I Learned to Heal Myself

I have always been a healthy person. But about two years ago my hair suddenly started shedding like crazy. I knew it wasn't normal. It was so scary to see so much hair falling out every day.

I went to the doctor and had all of the necessary tests done. Nothing was physically wrong, they said. Then I went to two more doctors just to make sure. The diagnosis was the same: stress. The advice: stop being so stressed.

Easier said than done. Not to mention the fact that I am a life coach. I coach other people through their stress. Why was I having this problem? I didn't even feel like I was really that stressed. It just didn't make any sense. I even confronted God on this. "Why are you doing this to me?" I asked.

The doctors gave me a couple of prescriptions to try and help regrow what was being lost, so I took them, but I didn't want to be taking medicine for this for the rest of my life.

I knew I had to get to the root of whatever was causing me stress, so, I started searching for information and came across the concept of mind-body healing. I have heard about the concept before, so I was definitely interested! I enrolled in a tele-class that I took for a few months.

I started practicing the tools I was learning for mind-body healing daily. Interestingly, I made a proclamation on December 31, 2014. "This problem does not come with me into 2015." And with that, the problem was gone. Amazing!

I still get the normal hair shedding, and if I see it pick up, I know what to do. I guess that is just how my body is responding to stress at the moment. The exciting thing is that I learned some great tools to help other people with their stress and mind-body healing that really work!

Now, I help women heal themselves so they can more fully live and enjoy their lives!

Life Coaching Helps Reduce Anxiety and Stress

I am so blessed to be working in a field where I can help people like Kathy. This is her testimonial.

"I have seen therapists in the past who have helped me in limited ways.  Too often I left them after a few sessions feeling like I was just repeating my issues and had come full circle with how they could help me. Working with Tina opened up many new paths for me to deal with my worries and anxieties. Each week I felt I left our session with a new tool to try. I have had great success with Tina reducing my stress and overcoming fears that were not allowing me to enjoy my life. Thank you Tina!"
For the past five years I have been helping moms like Kathy rediscover their happiness so they can enjoy life with their families. If you have would like to seek some guidance for yourself, I am offering a 5-year anniversary special for new clients through August 5th. Purchase six sessions for the cost of five. That's one session on me!

Breathe Through Your Holiday Stress

During the holidays many people experience stressful situations as they go about all of their activities -- things like dealing with difficult family members, missing loved ones who are gone and trying to accomplish everything on the "to do" list -- just to name a few.

Today I would like to give you a tool for handling this stress holistically. It's a simple tool that you can take with you wherever you go -- it's called belly breathing, or abdominal breathing.

During times of emotional stress, people tend to unconsciously hold their breath. This is harmful, because it can lead to a host of problems including high blood pressure, muscle pain and stuck emotions.

The good news is that we can learn to breathe better and reduce the harmful effects on our body, mind and spirit.

Here is a simple technique from the AMSA:
  • Place one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen.
  • Take a slow deep breath in through your nose, then hold it for a count of 7. As you breathe in, the hand on your abdomen should rise higher than the one on your chest.
  • Slowly exhale through your mouth for a count of 8. As all the air is released, gently contract your abdominal muscles to completely evacuate the remaining air from the lungs.
  • Repeat the cycle four more times for a total of 5 deep breath cycles.
Once you feel comfortable with this technique, you may want to incorporate words that can enhance the exercise. Examples would be to say to yourself the word, relaxation (on the inhale) and stress or anger (on the exhale). The idea is to bring in the feeling/emotion you want with the inhalation and release the feeling you don't want with the exhalation.

Do this exercise twice a day or whenever you find your mind dwelling on upsetting thoughts. You should notice it brings you to a more peaceful place. Merry Christmas!

An Easy Holiday Season Coping Tool

The holiday season is now upon us, and things are about to get crazy. Much of the busyness is unavoidable, although I would challenge you to really look at what you are saying "yes" to right now.

Today I want to share with you a coping mechanism. A tool that will help you keep your wits about you through this season.

If you use it, it will keep you happier, healthier and more peaceful.

If you don't already have one, get a journal to write in. Any spiral notebook will do if you don't have one.

Every day follow these 2 steps:

1. On one piece of paper, write down everything that is stressing you out. Everything that is on your mind. Everything you are worried about. Everything. Get it out. Fill up the whole page.

2. Now, flip the page over. Here you are going to write everything you are grateful for. People. Places. Things. Everything.

That's it. That's all. Coaching 101 stripped down to the bare basics. If you will do this every day, you will bring such peace to your soul.

This exercise only takes about 10 minutes and allows you that time to be still. Part of why we get so crazy during the holidays is that we don't slow down enough to even hear ourselves think.

Once you've gotten everything out of your head, you can see where you need to take action. Good luck and let me know if you need more guidance.

Family Rocks!

It's difficult to label this photo with how everyone is scattered,
but suffice it to say that both of my brothers and
both of my sisters are in it!
Just thinking about how grateful I am to be living in Illinois near my family right now. So much has been going on lately -- so many reasons to celebrate!

On my Dad's side of the family, we seem to go through weeks of "events" like birthdays, baptisms and graduations. That's what happens when you have a large family!

We are now in one such stint -- three weekends in a row of family events! My nephews, Carson and Michael, both turned one; Michael was just baptized; and my nieces Katlin and Kelsey are celebrating their high school graduation!

Last weekend all five of us Verley kids (and our families) were in the same place at the same time! Pretty cool! That was a rare occasion before I moved back!

On my mom's side, we've gotten to do things like go to dinner together, spontaneously meet up for lunch, and go to a gorgeous lakeside farmer's market together.

These feelings of gratitude are further validation that I am where I need to be right now! So glad I can be here!

Socks in the Freezer?

I never thought I'd hear myself say, "Do you wanna put your socks in the freezer?" to my five-year-old. But that's exactly what I said to avert a meltdown yesterday. And guess what!? She took me up on it!

You see, I have this rule about my kids wearing gym shoes and socks to play outside -- it prevents injuries to their cute little tootsies.

But yesterday, it was HOT, and Alyssa didn't want to put them on. I was not going to negotiate on this point or back down, so I had to get creative!

Out of nowhere the freezer idea popped into my head! I'm glad she took me up on it!

After about a minute, she took her socks out of the freezer and put them on with a big smile! "They feel perfect!" she said.

Then, off she went to put on her gym shoes and play outside!

Crisis averted!
